A flyer of a popular cleric’s views on Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia went viral on accounts of Muslims on Facebook on Wednesday, October 13, 2024.
The cleric in question was Kumasi-based Sheikh Anas Tawfiq Al-Bakri, the Imam of Darul Hadith Institute for Islamic Studies, Kumasi.
Iqra Today found that the quote which was on the flyer of Iqra Radio 103.7FM was gleaned from an interview he granted the station earlier in the day.
It read: “Why should anyone have a problem with me saying good things I know about Bawumia? I say things about him that I can repeat in front of Almighty Allah because they are the truth. He is a good man. Allah has blessed him with good character. he is humble and compassionate and has helped people through us.”
Pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) accounts are thrilled at the testimony about Bawumia who is the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 presidential elections. There were other voices that said it was the Imam’s right to commend Bawumia for what he knows about him even if they disagreed with his politics.
Weeks back, a call for all Muslims to vote for Bawumia to become the first Muslim president by Sheikh Ishaq Nuamah also generated a lot of praise and pillory.
Bawumia is seeking to succeed his boss, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as president, but his main contender in the December 7 race is former president John Dramani Mahama who is running for the seat for the fourth consecutive time after winning in 2012 and losing the 2012 and 2016 race to Akufo-Addo.
