I will spend my first night as president in prison – Hassan Ayariga explains

Hassan Ayariga, one of three Muslims on the 2024 presidential ballot, has stated one of his first acts if he becomes president after the 2024 elections.

The All Peoples Congress (APC) flagbearer speaking at an event in Accra, stated that he would demonstrate his zero tolerance for corruption by spending his first night in office as President in prison—a symbolic act to warn his appointees that he would not hesitate to jail them if they are found guilty of corruption.

“I pledge on my honour that I shall never engage in corruption in my lifetime as President, as a father, as a young man, or in any capacity in Ghana. I want to pledge to all of you that when I become President, I will spend my first night in prison. This will signal that anyone caught in corruption under my leadership will face the same treatment. Let us be serious,” Ayariga said.

The 2024 election is weeks away. Hassan along with Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and Mohammed Frimpong are the Muslims on the 12-person ballot paper.

A President and 276 Members of Parliament will be elected on election day to govern the country for the next four years.

Political analysts say the general election is a two-horse race between the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the incumbent Vice President, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, who is also a former President.
