LIST: The 3 Muslims on new UG Governing Council

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, officially inaugurated the new Governing Council of the University of Ghana on Friday, April 25, in Accra.

The new body is an 18-member council, chaired by presidential advisor and former Attorney General, Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew.

According to IqraToday.com checks there are three Muslims on the council, among them two academics and a retired banker who is now a traditional ruler in the north. They are:

a. Naa Dr. Alhassan Andani,

b. Dr. Abdul Karim Hatsu and

c. Dr. Inusah Abdul-Nasiru.

The other members of the board are: 

a. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew – Chairperson

b. Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo,

c. Dr. Kwesi Amakye-Boateng,

d. Ms. Precious Kyei Bonsu,

e. Ms. Doris Kisiwa Ansah,

f. Prof. Nana Akua Anyidoho,

g. Mr. Michael Owusu Ansah,

h. Mr. John Dadzie Mensah,

i. Prof. Folassade Tolulope,

j. Rev. Fr. Stephen Owusu Sekyere,

k. Mr. George Agyekum Donkor,

l. Ms. Tina Sackeyfio,

m. Major Daniel Ablorh-Quarcoo (Rtd),

n. Mrs. Yvette Adounvo Atekpe,

o. Mr. Maradona Adjei Yeboah,

p. Mr. Bright Amansiah and

q. Mr. Benjamin Nkumsah.

The Education Minister tasked the new Governing Council to champion educational and infrastructure development policies for the University.

He promised that the Government is poised to operationalise the National Research Fund to support universities in conducting research that will drive Ghana’s growth and development.

“The president has asked me to convince you that this year, he intends to operationalise the National Research Fund, and accordingly, an amount of GHC50 million has been allocated for the take-off of the National Research Fund.

“And then also your affiliate institutions, but more importantly, again, that today the university must sail through an appropriate, legitimate public-private partnership to expand your infrastructure both academic and residential in order that you can go and improve the student population,” he said.

New Council Chair, Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew in her acceptance speech touted UG as a bedrock of academic excellence in the country. She pledged to work with UG Management in the spirit of commitment and visionary leadership.
