On January 7, 2025; John Mahama’s return to the presidency after eight years in opposition was sealed. He left the stage in 2016 handing over to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and he was back to the same place to take over from Akufo-Addo, now the former president.
Thousands from all walks of life thronged the Black Star Square to witness the ceremony that was essentially a meeting of Parliament, because the president could only be sworn in before the representatives of the people of Ghana.
There was the parliamentary routine of MPs filing in, arrival of guests and of the president and his vice, the formal swearing in and the inaugural speech as well as congratulatory session.
One thing, however, stood out and had tongues wagging. Mahama’s choice of clothes for the big occasion. It was an all white agbada with four adinkra symbols on the chest area, with his short sleeve inner having Kente stitched at the edges of the sleeves.
The other visible kente bits of his dress was the kente stitched across the entire edge of the front of his agbada and of course it was accompanied by a kente-made cap to match.
A political event it was but it was principally for the new president to formally take the reins of power and his polished black shoe was the icing on the cake if you want.
Savour photos of Mahama at the swearing in as shared online.
