Muntaka represents Mahama as Burkina Faso honours Sankara with mausoleum

Years after his gruesome death, Burkina Faso formally opened a mausoleum in the memory of Captain Thomas Sankara in the capital Ouagadougou.

President John Dramani who was invited by the Burkinabe government dispatched a government delegation led by Interior and National Security Minister, Mohamed Muntaka Mubarak.

The Minister in a Facebook post dated May 18, gave a run down of what happened in Ghana’s northern neighbour.

“Yesterday, I had the singular honour of representing the President of the Republic of Ghana and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, HE John Dramani Mahama as the head of government delegation to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso to express solidarity with our brothers and sisters.”

“The ceremony saw the government of Burkina Faso officially inaugurate a Memorial Park featuring a towering statue in honour of Captain Thomas Isidore Noël Sankara and his twelve comrades who were tragically assassinated on October 15, 1987,” his post added.

According to reports, ‘Fallen but forever alive in their hearts’, the newly unveiled Thomas Sankara Memorial Park is a place for reflection and revolution meant to guide Burkina Faso in its ongoing struggle against oppression, colonialism, and terrorism.

In a related tribute, Ghana’s former President, HE Jerry John Rawlings, was posthumously honoured with immense praise with an assurance that a ceremonial street in Ouagadougou will be named after him this week.

We are enormously grateful to the government and people of Burkina Faso for the warm reception as we collectively honour the sacrifices of the past and recommit ourselves to the ideals of justice, unity, and Pan-Africaism.
