The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference and the Christian Council of Ghana, in a statement dated November 26, 2025 stated their position on ongoing public discussions around religious freedom in the country.
The discussions were triggered by a case before the Supreme Court, in which a Muslim lawyer called Shafic Osman is suing Wesley Girls Senior High School, the Ghana Education Service and the Attorney General, citing possible breach of rights of WGHS students barred from fasting during Ramadan and in some cases from praying while in school.
In their statement, the two ecumenical bodies cited a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the faith-based organisations to uphold agreed upon rights of students in the respective institutions. The MoU, which was agreed and adopted by Government-Assisted and Private Mission Schools and validated on April 15, 2024, was developed by the Conference of Managers of Education (COMEU), facilitated by the National Peace Council.
It outlined the measures for the practice of various religious beliefs in the mission schools in the country, which ensure that students practise their respective faiths.
