FULL TEXT: National Muslim Conference statement on Wesley Girls suit

The National Muslim Conference of Ghana (NMCG), comprising leaders of the major sects of Islam in Ghana has formally responded to a joint statement by the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) and the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (GCBC), relative to a lawsuit against Wesley Girls High School (WGHS) over rights of Muslim students.

The conference, which is under the leadership of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, in their statement highlighted key issues from the ongoing public debate.

Below are a number of the issues addressed:

1. The conference is asking Muslim students be allowed to exercise their religion while obeying existing rules in the Christian schools. They are basically asking Muslims students to be excluded from Christian specific religious practices in Christian mission schools.

2. They believe the joint Statement of CCG and GCBC is a contradiction of the MoU signed by assisted mission schools with the GES.

3. They believe it will not be good for Muslims to be in Muslims Schools while Christians school in Christian Schools. This practice will not encourage harmonious living and interfaith dialogue.

4. They believe, there is a need to live together not to segregate Ghanaians on religious lines.

5. They have provided a pathway for Christian Mission Schools who want to maintain their ethos and character. Do not accept government funding, government teachers. Do not include your schools for selection in the computerised system.
