Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections has called on Muslims to vote for the NPP and Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s presidential flagbearer.
Without stating any particular reason, he described a Muslim voting against fellow Muslim aspirants as haram (forbidden).
“If you are a Muslim and you live in Dagbon and you take your thumbprint and you vote for NDC, it is haram.
“If you are an Imam and you pray and you pray for John Dramani Mahama to be president instead of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, it is haram. NDC only uses Muslims for votes, they also use northerners for vote,” Opoku Prempeh, alias Napo, stated during a visit to the Ya Naa (October 7, 2024).
The main aspirants in the 2024 presidential election race are Bawumia (a Muslim) and John Mahama (a Christian) – both men are northerners. Bawumia is the current Vice President while Mahama is a former Vice President and President.
This is not the first time Napo is making comments deemed controversial. He is on record to have said the NDC is the only party in Ghana to demolish mosques and murder Imams.
He has also alleged that Imams and pastors were used to undertake advocacy of LGBTQ components of school curriculum under the Comprehensive Sexuality Education module in 2015.
