Salisu an unused substitute as Monaco beat Strasbourg

Ghana defender Mohammed Salisu was an unused substitute in AS Monaco’s away game to Strasbourg in the French Ligue 1 on October 9, 2024.

The game ended 3-1 in favour of Monaco who staged a comeback to grab all three points on the road. “It was a victory as stunning as it was unexpected! While they were surprised in the first half by a very enterprising RC Strasbourg, the AS Monaco players were patient enough to turn the match around and win at the Stade de la Meinau (1-3). It was a precious win, which allows AS Monaco to take back second place in the top flight from OM,” Monaco wrote in their post-match report.

Guela Doue put Strasbourg in the lead in the 29th minute but a double from Eliesse Ben Seghir in the 79th and 89th minute gave Monaco a lead before an injury time third by George Ilenikhena sealed the victory.

Salisu was named part of the squad following his recovery from injury. The Black Stars centre-back picked up an injury while playing for Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan in Libya.

He has been out since October but returned to training last week.

His absence has been a huge blow for the French giants whose challenge for the title suffered within that period, as they dropped from being joint top to third place. They moved to second after the victory.

Meanwhile, Salisu has not been included in the Black Stars team for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and Niger next week. In his absence, coach Otto Addo invited French-based Nathaniel Adjei for the crucial games.

The Black Stars will travel to Luanda on Friday for the penultimate game of the AFCON qualifiers before hosting Niger on Monday, November 18, 2024.
