‘Soldier on, young captain’ – GTV social media admin to Kudus

Barely 24 hours  after he led the Black Stars in their last 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Niger, skipper of the side, Mohammed Kudus, received support for his leadership.

The West Ham international won but missed a penalty in the final minute of the game that was played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

If he had converted, the Black Stars would still not have qualified for the AFCON because the game would only have ended 2-2 instead of the 2-1 victory the visitors went away with.

The official social media account of the state broadcaster, GTV Sports, posted a message backing Kudus despite the disappointment.

“Dear Mohammed Kudus, You have given us many beautiful moments, and we appreciate you for this. In these hard times, we need you to know we are behind you; the good times will come again. Soldier on, young captain,” the message accompanied by a photo of Kudus in action read.

Kudus came under attack from a section of social media users following the outcome of the game. Otto Addo’s side failed to qualify for AFCON for the first time in two decades.

They ended their qualifying group with three draws and three losses. Angola, Sudan and Niger occupied the first to third slots of their group with the Black Stars firmly rooted at the bottom.
