Bawumia needs 9% to win 2028 polls – Wontumi explains

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Chairman Wontumi, has explained why Mahamudu Bawumia will be the best presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) come 2028.

According to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the main opposition party, Bawumia’s performance in the 2024 elections is a boost for him to build on in 2028 when the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be presenting a new candidate.

In an interview on Wontumi TV on August 2, 2025, he explained: “If Bawumia has contested and gotten 41.65% on his first attempt, he now needs a little about 8.3% to hit the 50% plus threshold to win the next election.

“In 2028, irrespective of whatever the performance of the Mahama government or the candidate the NDC fields, Bawumia already has a head start with his last vote volume, he is only looking for about 9% to win the election,” he added.

Bawumia is currenlty a frontrunner for the NPP’s 2028 flagbearer contest slated for early January 2026. He is expected to face competition from Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Kwabena Agyapong and others.
