On Thursday and Friday, 29th and 30th May, 2025, former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led a delegation including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Chief of Staff, Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare and some officials of the last administration, to attend the final funeral rites of the late Mion Lana, Abdullai III, at Sambu (Mion).
In a post on Facebook, Akudo-Addo said: “The late Mion Lana’s family and mine have been close for many generations. His grandfather, the late Ya Na Mahamadu Abdullai I, was a friend of my father. His father, Ya Na Mahamadu Abdullai II, was my own very good friend. As Bolin Lana, whenever I came to Yendi, political or otherwise, I went to visit him. A cherished relationship that maintained itself right up till the end.”
He added: “Mion Lana Abdulai III and his brother, Yoo Naa Yakubu Andani, were indispensable to finding a solution to the Dagbon crises. It was their understanding of what was necessary to be done to bring peace and lasting reconciliation in Dagbon that made the settlement possible. They accepted my advise that those special circumstances warranted a special solution which was to allow the then Savelugu Naa to come to Yendi as Ya Na Mahama Abukari II and I will always, with fondness and affection, remain grateful to him, and his brother, for helping me to bring the peace to Dagbon.
“I extend to the Ya Na, his son, the regent of Mion, and the good people of Dagbon, my deepest condolences. May his soul rest in perfect peace in the Bosom of the Almighty, until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again,” the post concluded.
